you can set the time, but the minimum is 1 minute after you leave the area. this has a pretty wide range of motion so you don't need to be 'directly' in front.

It can be set up in different manners. I have mine to turn on and go off after 5 minutes of no motion. I have mine near the ceiling in a 90 degree corner (top of stairs and down hall. it picks up motion at the bottom of the stairs and end of the hall. I had to set it to medium to avoid it catching motion of someone walking by the end of the stairs.

You can set the time left on after no motion is detected in the setup phase of the sensor. I leave them on for varying times, bedroom 10 minutes, bath 20 minutes and utility room 5 minutes. So yes you can in the setup phase of the sensor.

No you don’t need to be directly in front of it, just like your eye it has a wide field of vision
As for how long it will stay on, you can set that in the app, 
“Turn on When motion detected”
“Turn off after xx of no motion”

As long as it detects motion, the light will remain on. You can choose how long the light will remain on by setting how long after the sensor no longer detects motion the light shuts off. There are settings for the light to shut off 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after it last detects motion. You can also adjust the sensor's motion and daylight sensitivity.
