No, if your Xbox one controller already have a 3.5mm jack then you do not need an adapter.. But if your using 1st Gen Xbox one Controller and it doesn’t have the 3.5mm jack, then yes you will need to buy an adapter

The original Xbox one controller needs an adapter, but the latest ones have a 3.5mm jack (older ones used 2.5mm) which you can just plug the headphones in. I use then plugged into my Xbox controller and works great.
