You can use with no plan needed. When you purchase a camera ring offers you a 30 day free trial which is pretty much recording your videos...but other than that you can still get notifications (motions detected) and watch live whenever you want but no recording. I have one for indoor and only use it when my kids too quiet and probably up to no good hahaha (with no plan). I Hope i was helpful to your question... Yes you can use this a stand alone camera once you download the Ring app. If you don't need archived video and just want to use the camera in Live View, their won't be any additional fees.

You can use it just to look at what you want. The service to record and store is only $30 per year though. A really good deal.

Yes, you can use it as a standalone. I have a separate security system. If I would have added a camera, it would have cost too much. So, I bought the Ring camera as an extra level of security. Ring offers a limited time of free video recording. After that, you will be charged an additional fee to keep video recording, $3 a month or $30 annually. It was cheaper than adding a camera to my existing security system.

I do not have a Ring security system, and I use this camera as a stand-alone in my apartment. You do need to download the Ring app to be able to view the video.
