To view live video on your phone, you do not need to initiate a service plan. However, to store video in the cloud, you do. Ring’s current monthly fee for cloud storage is $3/cam, if I understand it correctly.

If you want to watch video for previous motion events, you will need a Ring plan, which costs money after the first 30 days. Prices currently are $3 per month (or $30 per year) for Protect Basic, which covers one device, or $10 per month (or $100 per year) for Protect Plus, which covers all of your devices at one location. So if you have four or more devices at one location, the Plus plan is the better deal. The Plus plan also includes some additional perks (free monitoring if you have Ring Security, discounts, etc.), but you can research those.
