You would really want to get a subscription, because you can only live view without it. There's no recording or looking back at footage. If all you needed was a camera that you wanted to peek in on, then I believe you could get by without a subscription, but if you needed to record anything then you would be out of luck. Guess it all depends on what you need out of it, but it's all done via the phone. You can see it on pc but the functionality is not as good on pc.
