Only one rechargeable battery is used by the apparatus at a time. The system alerts you when the power is low and the second battery kicks in. When our battery is low the video and wifi don’t seem to work. I live further south than MN but the batteries do not last long when it is cold out. Maybe the two batteries last a week and we haven’t hit freezing yet here.

It has been very cold since we have installed these outside.  There have been no issues... they are working great and batteries are lasting!
