Yes you definitely need a monthly plan to look at past videos (beyond the trial period)

Ring will give you a 30 days free period that you can storage the recordings whenever you buy a new camera but after that, you will need to pay for it. FYI, make sure your internet is really good as this company camera’s sometimes are difficult to open in “ live” view if you have internet issues..
