• It's a yearly subscription at minimal cost. I'm not recalling it being expensive. Cheap security in my book

• It is not required, however I do recommend purchasing. Without the subscription you will only be notified that there is motion at your camera but it will not capture and record for you to review later. If you do not immediately look at your device (phone, tablet) you will miss what just went down. The pricing is on the ring website under the 'Protect Plans' tab.
