No. You can use the ring doorbell with or without an existing doorbell. If you do not have a doorbell, it simply attaches to your desired wall location via the instructions and can be connected to your WiFi network. The total install/setup is under 30 mins. You will have to charge it about every couple of months depending on the use. If you have a doorbell. The install will take a little longer but you will never have to charge the unit. The ring provided installation instructions are really simple to follow for how to wire the unit up at the ring doorbell and at your physical doorbell in your home.
