No, they don't have to ring the bell. Motion trips it and you can set it for how far you want it to trip as well as the frequency of notifications for when it is tripped.

It will detect motion and begin recording without anyone ringing the bell. You can decide, in your personal settings, whether you want to receive alerts for motion, only for doorbell rings, both, or neither. It is also customizable in how far it will detect motion, based upon the configuration of your home relative to your street, etc.
