“Why does the backlighting around the outlets randomly turn on? I know I can turn on the backlights with the LIGHT button. No wires sit on the LIGHT button and no big plugs are connected near the LIGHT button. I have 3 of these, all do it.”

Aha, the culprit is our microwave oven. These surge protector's backlights are very sensitive to some power draws. If I run my microwave for over 30 seconds, the backlights will flash and then turn on. Notice, the microwave oven is NOT connected to the surge protector. Different circuit breaker.
