That is basically the same issue I was having. I purchased Apple TV so that I could easily watch movies I owned without having to connect my ipad directly to the television. In my case, my television has 2 ports. My cable box is plugged into my HDMI 1 and this box is plugged into HDMI 2. I then have my DVD player and Apple TV plugged into the box. In your case, I would think you plug this switcher to your television's HDMI port and then plug the devices into the switcher.
