To download the channel it's free, but to actually use the service you'd have to buy a subscription for Netflix, Hulu, etc.

You can install the channels themselves for free but, you will need to enter account information before you can see everything. You will still need accounts with those providers and pay for the services you want. The Roku has 1000s of streaming channels to watch free content so, you might be able to find other channels to provide what you want to see.
