There are a lot of free movies and shows available. The channels you have access to depends on your TV provider and other subscriptions.

Please try again later.I am know there are other pay services you can steam to the Roku device if you have them, but I did not pay anything to Roku after setting up my account. I use it to stream Comcast Xfinity live TV and movies to my TV. I do know that you can "rent" online movies, so they do ask for a credit card, but if I remember correctly you can secure that on your account with a pass code. Been a little bit since I set it up.

There is a LOT of free content available and many of the major networks/channels have an app that let's you watch content albeit not all of it and not always up to the minute. If you do want to watch everything exactly when you want it, you would likely want to add one or more subscriptions to streaming services (Netflix, DirecTV Now, premium Roku channels, etc).
