No, the Roku handset ends up controlling the tv as well.

No, its no problem. Most tv's hdmi ports are on the back so Roku's remote was made to work well when the streaming stick is connected to the back of the tv. The bigger problem is the streaming stick is a piece of junk that won't last you very long. Junk product.
