“My Samsung SMH1622S died. Does anyone know if the mounting bracket placement and cabinet hole placement are the same for Samsung units of similar size? In other words, can I buy this new unit and just install it using the existing bracket and holes?”

Probably if you buy same model with same dimensions. We replaced our old model and new model fits. We reused the same brackets from old microwave. It saves time installing it.
