“As this TV has no Bluetooth, I have a connected a SPDIF Audio Optical Fiber Cable from the Digital Audio Out to my Bose SoundLink Mini, but no sound transfers. Is it not possible to augment this TV's sound using an external device in this way?”

Make sure that you are going through the Connection Guide for the recommended setup or the additional audio devices: "Home Button > Source > Connection Guide > Audio Device > Optical/Audio Out"
