You don't need a smartphone or computer to program it but the apps, Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health are necessary to get full use of it. The watch itself keeps track of steps, heart rate, stress, and sleep. With the apps you can change watch faces for the info you want at a glance and watch for trends as you use the watch.
