You get a credit on remaining UnUsed Protection time, but you will have to buy a brand new protection plan for your Note 9.

If you’re paying for it monthly then you should be able to transfer it to your note 9 just make sure you call geek squad and let them know. And make sure you get it in writing somehow. If you went ahead and paid the two-year cost upfront I believe they will possibly prorate you back whatever is left and you can use that towards the new two years for the note 9
