“What is the advantage of using onboard storage vs an sd card? I'm considering the 64 gb version of this tablet with an additional128 gb sd card. Is there any advantage of the 64 gb tab s2 over the 32 gb version? What advantage does the onboard storage offer that the sd card cannot?”

Onboard storage is faster. But I can't say how much. I bought a 128 GB SD Card and all my music is on it. The music plays fine for me.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Definitely. I used to get the smaller tabs and add sd card storage, but you can only hold certain things on the external sd card. Only movies, photos, those kinds of things. It gives you the option to move apps, but when it updates them it updates them on the system and then you have to move them again. Plus even if you move the app to the sd card, it still has to store a portion on the tablets internal storage.
