I have vision loss, am able to use a smartphone/tablet visually bc I use very strong reading glasses that a low vision optometrist prescribed. On both, I have made the font size "Huge". A Super Amoled screen like this Sammy tab has also helps me see text bc it has greater contrast and blacker blacks. I highly recommend you go to a Best Buy with her and have them set up a Sammy Super AMOLED tablet like this. If strong reading glasses don't help or her vision will change, I would try Apple tablets which have speech. The speech is very good but there is quite a learning curve.
