Its connects to your phone via bluetooth. So the notifications are sent to your watch because it is mirroring what you get on your phone. You don't need to have your phone on you at all times but you need to be within reasonable distance for it to work. If you're too far away, your phone will make call your watch, which is actually very convenient for theft or loss.
