“Im thinking about getting a gear s3 classic that has lte capability. I want to know if i need a phone to be able to set the watch up and download apps to it or can i take it straight out of the box and have it ready to go and download stuff from the watch”

In order to use the watch, it has to have an initial connection via the Samsung gear app. From there you can download some workout apps, golfing, and a few others and use most of their features without the phone being nearby. The phone is required in order to download anything to the watch; it uses Samsung apps to download and push apps to your gear watch. Full applications cannot be downloaded since the watch just makes doing what you do on your phone easy and discrete, such as: looking at a notification while in a meeting without pulling out your phone, getting all your workouts and fitness in without having to have your phone tag along and something to fidget with if you have busy hands.
