Does the fact that it is a certified refurbished affect the performance of the drive at all? I need to know if there is a difference between this and a new one in terms of overall lifespan and performance of the product. null

The difference between new and refurbished at Best Buy has nothing to do with condition or warranty. It may have been returned unused for many reasons like a torn box for example. It is just like buying brand new, except the price is reduced.

I have just received 3 of these and they operate just like my new ones. they have between 25 and 99 hours on them, so I expect the lifespan to be reduced by that much.

I would say not in most cases. I bought this drive and it writes above advertised speeds and should for a decade based on what I have read from torture tests posted online. My refurbished drive only had 0.5 TB written, so it was practically new considering you could easily write that much to a drive in one day of heavy use.

Sorry I am answering now. There SHOULD NOT be any difference between this and 'new'. Mine is just fine....
