The unit has cellular service only as a backup, the unit can run off WiFi. If you activate the ADT Service it includes the cellular service as a benefit, because it would be used as a backup should your WiFi fail.

Once set up correctly the device operates as an advance alarm monitor and lighting device for emergencies and non-emergencies. This device will speak, not chirp or blare sound, should the device detect a problem and inform you what area of your home the problem is located. What type of problem has been detected. Wifi/cell services are required to receive notifications of problems protect as detected when away from your home.
