I was able to confirm that the system only communicates to ADT using the cellular connection. If your home Wifi goes out you will not be able to communicate with the SmartThings hub using the SmartThings app. How do I know? First off the cellular service is not even active until you activate live monitoring with ADT. Also after activating my service I unplugged my wireless router and modem and I could not use the SmartThings app at all. It reported the hub as being offline.

You're correct, the cellular connection is used to communicate security alerts to ADT in the case of power or internet loss, for up to 24 hours. It does not allow offline use of the SmartThings Hub capabilities. Please let us know if you have any other questions and we'll be happy to assist!
