Yes, yes and yes. I use mine to store videos. It doesn't force you to mirror-backup anything. It is just "Drive F:" in 'My Computer'. I think it is only 7.2 TB or something instead of 8 terrabytes, which is always disappointing. But every brand does that.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.On a PC, the answer is yes. (Pretty sure on Mac but not positive.) The drive can be written to like any other volume and can be reformatted like any other. I use it for archiving internet downloads, but the data is not in a "backup" format. It could be used for running programs, but if the program was installed to it when it was a specific drive letter and the drive was removed and later reattached, you may need to adjust the drive letters so the drive was the same letter as when the program was installed.
