Hard drives are used for storage, like games, music, and pictures. When you download and install a game, it's saved on storage. Memory (like RAM) is used for the current game or program you're currently running. I don't think the Xbox supports external memory. If you plug in a memory stick, it would use it as storage. When you turn off your Xbox, you lose what's in memory, but your storage remains intact.
