The drive is formatted as NTFS out of the box, so you can read and write with Windows but only read on a Mac (without special drivers). Maybe that is all you need, but if you need to write to it from a Mac, you will want to get some software for the Mac, or reformat the drive as exFAT. The latter is my preference since it works pretty much everywhere and it take a couple minutes to do. Most all my flash and portable drives are formatted as exFAT for that reason.
