When I first got mine it was a little difficult to detach the handle also. Try wiggling it as you pull it (be sure to use the release button at same time). After a couple of times it was easier to detach.

Please try again later.I think when you convert it to a canister you need to carry the motor part in your hand which I think is not convenient because it ties up both hands. I tried to leave it attached to the beater bar which has wheels but it tipped over. I really prefer a canister vac because everything you need is right there and you don't have to fidget with tools.
