Hello, Buck1. Great question! The Ring Solar Panels' only function is to deliver a trickle charge to the battery; otherwise, the Ring Spotlight Camera would not work at all. If you are looking to move away from batteries, we would recommend looking into the wired version of this particular camera. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You do need to have a battery in it but the solar panel will charge the battery so you shouldn't need to change the battery. When I look at my app I can see that the battery symbol shows it is charging.
