You can sync the playbase with 2 play 1s, 2 play 3s or 2 play 5s in a surround sound setup. You can also add a Sub to this for a 5.1 system,

It is all one through the Sonos App. You can add speakers to each room and then control right from your phone what plays. You can also setup the "surround sound system" with the App. Just put the Play 1,3, or 5 in the room with the playbase then access the app and follow the instructions to link them to the playbase. I was surprised at how easy the setup was.
