I have a playbase, sub, and 2 ones (with Alexa). I advise setting these up one at a time with the sonos app first and second with the Alexa app, so you can name them for later identification. Ex. Set up a playbase or sound bar first in sonos app, then set it up in the Alexa app. Continuing back and forth between apps until you set them all up. I haven't owned the playbar, but the sound from the playbase alone is enough for surround sound. We played a surround sound test on it and it sounds amazing. It even has enough bass that you probably wouldn't need a sub, unless you prefer a lot of bass. The sub bass is ridiculous. I live in a house and we have it only half way up because it is so strong. Pros: Alexa enabled Amazing sound quality Appealing design Plays music by voice (through Alexa) or the sonos app from amazon, spotify, and a lot more. You can adjust music and surround sound to be softer or louder than other speakers. The glitches can be updated to fix them. Cons: Couldn't get pandora to link Doesn't have all Alexa functioning All speakers decrease volume when talking to any Amazon's Alexa devices that are linked in your Alexa app. Setup is a little frustrating. If not setup properly, speakers will intermittently cut out. Have to buy special mounts for rear speakers (expensive). The speakers themselves are quite expensive. The playbase doesn't look right under a larger tv. (I set mine under my entertainment center). Can't setup more than 4 speakers (base/bar, sub, and 2 rear speakers) The app could be better with the layout.

We all ready have 2 Sonos speakers and where looking for a new surround sound for our entertainment system. The play base was the best choice for our needs. All three speakers can tie together or run individually. The Sonos app makes this simple and easy. The sound greats better every day as the play base gets use to our great room. Cleaned up all the old big speakers mess.

The Playbase looks fantastic and has excellent sound quality. This is the perfect solution for upgrading your tv's sound if your tv isn't wall mounted. Sound bars would block my tv's infrared and look clunky sitting in front of the tv. The Playbase is sleek and looks great under the tv. It produces plenty of bass for my needs for both movies and music. Setup is quick and easy and I can control the speaker through the Sonos app or directly from the Spotify app. I highly recommend Sonos speakers for a whole home wireless setup!

Paired with the Sonos One (Gen 1) the PLAYBASE provided a solid addition for a surround experience. Dialog enhancement provides a crips, clear, and robust sound to movies. The bass is ideal for the size of the my livingroom but has the flexability to add a subwoffer, if necessary. The flexibitliy of the Sonos is the allure and I love the sound it creates. As mentioned previously, Alexa support is not ideal but not a factor for I don't rely on Alexa anyway.

I was impressed by the quality of sound via a demo instore. I proceeded to purchase a month later. I have not regretted my purchase. This is the best sound bar on the market. Great bass and clear voice at even low volumes. I paired with a sub and 2 play 1s for a home theater experience.

I bought the Sonos PlayBase about a month ago and so far I love it. The sound coming from the PlayBase is LOUD and it blends with all my other electronics that I have. I added two Sonos Play:1's for surround sound. I recommend the Sonos PlayBase with the Sonos Play:1's for the ultimate surround sound experience.

The sound output is great! However for me is more about the versatility of the product. I can have the tv playing and switch to music with a Simple tap on my phone and play music through multiple Sonos speakers around the house from any streaming service I desire and best of all without interruptions from notifications or phone calls like a traditional Bluetooth speaker.

Added the PLAYBASE to my mix of 4 PLAY:1s Normally run two PLAY:1s as stereo pair in Living Room, single PLAY:1 in Master Bedroom and final PLAY:1 in Guest Room. When I want 5.1 surround I pull the Master and Guest and configure them as the rear L and R. First time moving already configured speakers (Master/Guest) out of their current roles into the 5.1 setup took about 10min to figure out. This wouldn't be the case if the rears were just new never configured speakers. Now knowing the reset step I can do the entire setup in 2 min. Just unplug and then hold down the pause button on top of the PLAY:1 before you plug it back in. Keep holding the pause button until the light goes orange (about 10-15 seconds), then configure speaker as one of the rears in the SONOS app (Setting / Add Player or Sub). Repeat for second rear. The app shows you step by step but starts assuming its a new speaker vs one you need to first reset from prior association. The key was holding the pause at plug in until orange light to reset it. The sound as a 5.1 is AMAZING. I didn't get a dedicated SUB as the PLAYBASE has plenty of sub for my taste. Was watching the latest Resident Evil the other night, decided it was going to a fun ride so moved the setup into 5.1. What a difference in the movie experience. I don't use the Living Room pair as their plugs are harder to reach, else would just pull those and setup as the rear L and R. Another cool feature of the PLAYBASE is it allows using all your SONOS speakers as TV speakers. I live where I can see into a baseball park from my deck. Shortly after getting the PLAYBASE I had a baseball party and put all 5 speakers into play as TV output. Nice to be able to hear the every play of the game from any room in the condo. To get to the heart of the review, the PLAYBASE took my 4 PLAY:1s to a new level. They always sounded great but playing music with the added PLAYBASE gives the sound extra depth and range. I sometimes show people with and without the PLAYBASE added to the groupings. Everyone notices what the PLAYBASE adds. Sometimes I'll just play the PLAYBASE solo grouped for music. There is great separation of instruments and it easily fills the 1700 sqf condo. I've yet to turn the PLAYBASE volume to 100%. My building has 3 feet concreate floors but don't want the blast the neighbors in who share the floor. Last note, during the day I have all 5 speakers playing music. When I turn on the TV after dinner, it auto migrates the PLAYBASE from music output to TV output. Nothing required, I guess when it detects the TV input, it just auto ungroups it and assigns it to the TV. Next day when I want to play music from all 5 I just group the TV back with the other 4 speakers, takes about 2 seconds to add it back to the main group. The TV output with just the PLAYBASE (no 5.1) is magnitudes above my TV speaker. The TV's default sound bar wasn't bad (2016 high end LG OLED) but it cannot compare to the PLAYBASE. Like all SONOS products, the initial setup was a breeze. The unboxing was very Apple Zen like and adding the PLAYBASE was very simple via the step-by-step direction in the SONOS app. It's a great purchase, loving it, would highly recommend as an addition or a starting point for anyone entering SONOS. If you start with just two PLAY:1 or just the PLAYBASE, you'll be happy happy but when you add the complementary product you'll be BLOWN AWAY.

    Sonos delivers with their playbase

I recently purchased the Sonos playbase and I have to say that it more than met my expectations. I read plenty of reviews, watched videos and also tested it out at my local Best Buy before I decided to pull the trigger and buy it. Needless to say, I felt pretty confident with my purchase. The unboxing process was an experience in itself, which I was happy about considering the price tag. The box came equipped with its own locking mechanism that kept things secure and added a bit of excitement to the process. I popped the top off and was pleasantly surprised to find that the soundbase was not wrapped in plastic but instead wrapped in a fairly heavy cloth. The power chord, optical cable, ethernet cable and a simplistic instruction guide were the only other items in the box. The base itself is pretty weighty and has a very good overall build quality. I had no worries setting my 55" OLED tv on top of it. The base looks very nice in the space and I would say that it would fit many different styles of decor. Hooking up the wires was a cinch. I would suggest connecting the optical and power chords into the back of the base before setting it up onto your stand. Otherwise, it can be a little struggle to connect them. The base needs a good Wifi connection to get it set up, which is the next step. You will need to download the Sonos app in order to get things rolling. After it's downloaded it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to get the base connected and ready to use. It really could not have been much easier to set up. As far as the sound quality goes, I would rate it very good. It is without a doubt a huge upgrade from any standatd tv speakers. Music sounds great! Vocals come through clear and crisp. It handles bass surprisingly well and without distortion. Movies also sound great. The playbase really packs a punch during action scenes and can also handles the subtleties in movies such as blowing wind. I haven't had a chance to listen to sports yet but I imagine it will sound great too. The bottom line is that the Sonos playbase is a well made, great looking and great sounding piece of equipment. It is pricey, but if you are looking to upgrade your sound system and can afford to do so then the playbase is definitely worth considering.

Excellent sound and design - with a few caveats

First off, this thing is typical Sonos - meticulous design, high quality plastics, heavy, and looks great on modern furniture. The sound is exceptional for music - easily a rival of a Play:5 (good enough that I moved mine out of the room to use this for music). But the revelation for me was the TV sound - I had no idea how much bass and detail I've been missing. Good solid bass and clear across the rest of the range - and the dialog boost works great. That said, be sure to do your homework. It only takes optical in (no HDMI/ARC), and is dependent on what your TV passes. For example, my TV won't decode Netflix DD+ so I only get stereo out. Since I'm only running 2ch and don't have a full 5.1 setup this is not a big deal, but you might be disappointed if you shell out for a full system. While this is marketed as the core of a 5.1 system, I think it's best application is dramatically improved TV sound, and as an additional Sonos zone for your system. There are much more flexible surround options. But, the stereo sound is so good that I'm going to pick up a Playbar for my living room to replace my Play:5s there. In summary, typical Sonos - great sound and design, but make sure it fits your system and expectations.

This is my first Sonos purchase. I replaced my Samsung 2.1 system with this. I can say that if you do not want to ad a Sub and you just want a clean look, this will do that. It has a clean crisp sound. I really do believe that it does what Sonos says it is designed for and that is to reproduce the television sound as it is meant to be heard. Adding a sub may be too much for some, depending on the size of the room and what you intend to use it for. If you play mostly movies, I would go with a system that includes a separate subwoofer. However, if all you need is a basic speaker to really enhance what you hear on television shows and double as a music player, than this may be for you. I must admit that I am on the fence between leaving it the way it is, adding the Sonos sub, or exchanging it for the Playbar with the sub. My wife doesn't like to see wires and doesn't like for electronics to dominate a room so if you're in that same position, than this may be for you. Pros: I love how I can switch between TV sound and Amazon music or Pandora very quickly. I don't have to turn on the television to play music. It's thin. It's unobtrusive. The highs are nice and crisp, although a few might turn the treble down a tad. It's always on and doesn't have to warm up. The music played through it sounds better than bluetooth. It's expandable. Very easy set up and comes with a great app. Cons: The sub really isn't enough for action movies with loud explosions. The spread of sound isn't as wide as I'd like it to be. From what I understand, the sub relies on an internet connect so if your internet goes down, so does the sub. The Playbase will continue to work with your television and remote control without the internet (I tested it.)

Like many who have commented before I love the product. I coupled with two Sonos Play 1 speakers and Sonos Boost. Very easy to setup and sounds so much better than my previous older generation Bose products. I tried a number of wireless speaker products but they were Bluetooth dependent and interference always resulted in service interruptions. I did get the Sonos Boost to setup private network and have had 0 service interruptions.Waiting for sale on SUB so I can have full 5.1 setup.

Just like all Sonos products, it is very easy to set up. It even comes with the optical cable you need to connect to your TV. I bought a cable not realizing this. The sound quality is awesome. Plays music well. Will eventually move my Play:1 speakers to be surround but have not done so yet. I went with this speaker over their playbar because the bass was more full and the sub was not necessary.

I am very happy with the purchase. I really wanted a speaker bar/base that would not only give me amazing sound, but would help me hear dialogue. This was exactly what I wanted. I added the sub even though my wife said we didn’t need it. She may have been right but I feel like it adds nice low end. The best part about this speaker (other than the sound) is the ease of setup. The app does everything for you, I can generally figure out how to set things up but I appreciated the fact that it was all handled in the app. I am fully converted to sonos. The hardware and software are unbeatable.

This is my first Sonos product and I bought it after researching all the available soundbase (not soundbar) products. IMO, you won't need to add a subwoofer to get very satisfying bass and it has plenty of clean output to fill the average size room. Set up was fast and easy and I've experienced no connectivity issues whatsoever. I rated 4 stars instead of 5 because of the disappointing TruePlay room tuning (which btw is only available with the Apple app). I was expecting something akin to the improvements with room correction in an A/V Receiver and instead you get something - for my room at least - that's sounds better turned off. And that's okay because the unadjusted sound and its massive improvement over the TV speaker was everything I was hoping for. The price was a bit of a premium over others but it's worth it for the sound quality, cosmetics, and build quality.

The sound on this is AMAZING. It is super clear for vocals yet the background music is powerful. Not only is it great for film but it also does tremendously for just listening to music too. It has a full sound, and doesn’t even need the additional sub to get a great well balanced sound, though the sub adds obvious power. I compared it to other Samsung, Visio, and various other sound bars and this blows everything, including full systems out of the water. There’s only so much words can do to describe the great sound. The design is what initially drew me in. The low profile design is perfect because I’ve always thought sound bars look bulky and ugly. Sonos did a perfect job making a small design without sacrificing any sound quality. This is truly an amazing product, and when combined with the full 5.1 system, it’s beautiful.
