I have the Sony TV XBR - 65X850D and the Sony sound bar CT790. The TV remote does control the soundbar volume when it is on. The only time I grab the sound bar remote is to choose a different sound effect or adjust the sub woofer volume independently.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. So long as you connect an hdmi cable from the tv to the soundbar the tv remote will control the sound bar.

I connected the ARC connection between the two and I can control the volume with the TV remote or the sound bar remote. The sound bar remote does have some features that are not on the TV remote like changing the subwoofer volume and putting the soundboard into night mode, but other than that it works smoothly with just the one remote.
