On a full frame camera the 200mm range is a bit long for a small arena. You may be better off with the 100 to 400mm unless you are sitting in the nose bleed seats, then yes it will work. But on an APSC camera it will start at 300mm with the crop factor of 1.5 and then really may not work well. Also it starts at F5.6 so the ISO will have to be higher in low light indoor events and may cause a grainy pic.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Used mine for little league baseball taking pics from outside chain link fence, since not allowed anywhere on playing field, and got great action shots. Didn't always need full 600 mm range, but came in handy to have. I used single leg or full tripod, and usually in bright sunlight. Not sure how bright (ice?) hockey arena is, but well lit areas should do fine, even from higher up "cheap seats."
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I would suggest the the 70-200 or 100-400 for college hockey. The 200-600 will probably be too long in a rink.
