“Sony (Google) TV won't add apps (Amazon Freevee, etc.) - I get error message saying "Can't install - Try again and it if still doesn't work, see common ways to fix this problem..." but that is not helpful.”

We had the very same problem, after researching, we learned that you can delete some of the other apps you don’t won’t and able to add the ones you want to. Good luck. It is a bit of a learning curve to do so…

I hooked up a Roku Ultra on both Sony's and all is good. Easy to use and faster.

Same happened to me. I went in and deleted some of the other apps that I wasn’t using and it installed just perfectly.

When I was setting up my TV through my phone, I was experiencing problems... "Try again". Until I set it up through the remote. Not my phone. If you haven't tried that yet, give it a try.
