It has to be plugged in. Carplay can only be activated when it is plugged in or via wifi (in head units that support that function). Carplay does NOT support a bluetooth connection between the phone and the head unit.

Hi NIV, The iPhone needs to be connected to the USB port (via USB connection cable). The Bluetooth setting won't be available during Apple CarPlay connection. ~Ralph
