“Can this unit handle external speakers thru the headphone jack? (hard wired speakers) & if so what is a recomended speaker wattage. Please note I plan to connect external Electro Voice Speakers these are small room monitors 160 watts each.”

Hi dfish! The headphones jack of this unit can only be used for headphones. If you want to connect external speakers, you may need a receiver/amplifier. -Anthony
