- Answer I have the same question and it seems there is a difference between subtitle and closed captioning which most people confuse with each other.. https://www.matinee.co.uk/blog/closed-captions-vs-subtitles-and-why-the-difference-is-important/ However, these lengthy explanations go above the heads of most of us. The simple question is if a movie marked as closed-captioned (such as many on TCM) is copied from cable then will the DVD player show the captions?

- Answer Do you have any open HDMI inputs on your TV? If so, use one of those. But, you'd be better served to get a blu-ray player since you have the smart tv.
