There is no need for 2 connections, I use HDMI ARC only and I can control my system with either the Sony remote or the TV’s remote. YouTube is a good source for information for setting up HDMI ARC; not sure why your Sony remote is useless

Hi Squeaky, We are sorry to hear about the issue you are having with the remote control. Are all the buttons not working? To check if certain functions are working, lighting, or flashing of the indicators on the soundbar will indicate which functions are currently enabled. Ref: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/4748/e34a75abf7aac4f23b7cd29347800824/47487571M.pdf ( page 9).

And, no. there is no need for you to use both HDMI and optical cable.
