• you actually don't need to do the updates only when you are downloading apps.. for gaming you should be good.. it is good to update every once in a while for firmware fixes and bugs tho.. I suggest you get hot spot on your phone that's how I do my updates

• Yes. Any time to update the firmware you need to be connected to the Internet. I'm not sure if it's like the PS3 where games would update the firmware.
