Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, the digital coax will give you 5.1 surround assuming that your other equipment is compatible. I do agree that I also prefer the optical output but they are effectively the same. I should say however that you should get the identical audio when just using the HDMI output. The only time I use optical anymore is when I want headphones for my whole system so I don't disturb others in the house. For that I feed the optical from the back of the television to an optical to analog converter to a set of headphones. Now that I wear hearing aids it is not much of an issue, but I find that it is still helpful from time to time.
