• I don't know about using a sound bar. My mini cable/plug is in my Comcast box. I can use if even if the TV is muted or even off!

• Hi Cassey, Yes, you should connect the stereo mini cable to the headphone out of the TV. Connecting the headphones to the soundbar will not produce any sound since the connection is analog type and the soundbar to the tv is a digital type connection. We advised not to mute the TV. Muting the tv will also affect the sound on the headphones. Hope this helps! Regards, Sam
