I've never had a problem with this. If you own the headphones then I recommend contacting Sony support for help. If you don't own the headphones then read on: The headphones have a power switch along the edge of the ear cup in addition to the volume dial. Also, if you place one headphone on the charger the base ceases transmission. So if you have two headphones you can't charge & listen at the same time with just one base station. If the TV shuts off the speakers when you plug in the headphone jack then you have no other option but to unplug it if there is no setting to disable it via the tv menu. My tv doesn't turn off the external speakers so I have to manually turn the volume down to listen in ambient silence for when baby is napping or spouse is working.

When the headphones are placed on the charging stand/transmitter, they are automatically turned off and TV works normally.
