you can buy extension cables from the Swan website, so the cable can be as long as you need it to be. I added 100 feet to the 50 foot cable that came with it.

I would say you will need some slack towards the dvr end and maybe some slack depending on where you mount your camera. So 55 feet max? Also you have to remember you may have to run the cable up or down a wall which may not allow you to run the camera as far.
