If you want to get the program guide you will have to pay a fee. This makes the device usable. I seem to recall a YouTube video that said without the guide it maybe usable after a fashion but difficult. I strongly suggest you - Check the TIVO web site, or call TIVO support, to determine what the fee is and if it can be used without the guide.

This covers the cost of keeping your box's programming current - the channels you get, the shows and times, etc. This is necessary in order to view and record programming.

Please try again later.I believe you get a month free, but when I registered mine I also paid for the service during the process, so not sure if it would work with out going through the process. I know it requires a paid service to utilize the system, you can do it monthly or a one time charge, if you plan for long time use you would be better to do the one time process. Hope this helps.
