If you have an xfinity supplied modem/router combo you have two choices. You can keep the xfinity equipment and configure it for bridge mode (This mode just means the combo becomes a modem only). Then you need only setup the new router as you would with any other modem. I know that this used to be an option with xfinity and one you could do on your own or possibly with the assistance of tech support. Your better option is to ditch the rental and pay for your own equipment which will pay for itself with dividends.

However, if your existing router is actually a router + modem combination gateway, you will need to install a separate modem before using a standalone router.
