I would say at least one per floor in your house. I have some spread out areas that I needed coverage on one of three floors and I ended up putting two on that floor, so for my three floors I have 4 satellites.

You only need one connected to your modem. The other ones just extend the reach of your network to you with whole home coverage with no dead spots. With this system I am able to get gigabit speeds pretty much everywhere in my home and nearly 2gb speed when I'm connected to the main router

It’ll depend on the size of your house and what’s in between the satellites such as walls, furniture, etc. One device is supposed to cover 3000 sq ft, but your signal strength will drop the farther you get from it.
