Good question, what you get is an app on your cell phone that helps you configure and manage the new network. You need a profile, but not a subscription unless you want to subscribe to their "Homeshield" service ( I do not). I was able to perform a firmware update without paying for a subscription. I rely on a software firewall courtesy of my cybersecurity software not related to Deco (which does have a subscription) Hope this helps..

However, for some premium HomeShield options, such as Security+ and Advanced Parental Controls, a subscription is required.
