After card is filled up, new recordings are stored over the old which seems like a good thing. The data can be saved to a computer using the SD card.

This means that once the card is full, the oldest recording data will be overwritten by the newest. However, if your primary goal is to "back up" the data on the card, it will need to be removed and connected to a PC to back it up to another storage medium before being reinserted into the camera.
